Anasazi petroglyphs, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Southern Utah

The Anasazi lived in the Escalante area until about 900 years ago, when they mysteriously left, perhaps due to an extended drought. We see evidence of these ancient people on our hikes, including petroglyphs (drawings carved into rock walls), like those shown at left.

Click here for additional information on the Anasazi and photographs of petroglyphs seen on Cloud Canyon trips.

Alison Reitz (right) on the slickrock with participant Edrie. Alison is Cloud Canyon's director and head guide. She's been exploring this country for twenty years.

Steph has been on five Cloud Canyon trips! She has just hiked up out of the creek canyon seen behind her, where we camped the night before.

Hiking up the Escalante River

A Cloud Canyon group hikes up the Escalante River in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The walking sticks we're carrying were generously left for us by the beavers.
