Utah Trip Photographs -- Anasazi Petroglyphs

There are numerous archeological sites in the canyons where we hike. We will see ancient petroglyphs (rock art) as well as some small structures and sets of ancient steps carved into the cliffs. These magical creations have been in the canyons since the ancient people left, 900 years ago. The Escalante area was populated by the "Fremont" culture, an Anasazi-equivalent society that farmed and hunted in the northern Escalante canyons area. The small museum in Boulder, Utah (near our trailheads) has numerous Anasazi artifacts and an excavated village.

This is an example of an Anasazi depiction of a mountain sheep. We saw this petroglyph in a small alcove above a sidecanyon of the Escalante River in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

A large human figure. A game animal is located just to the right of the figure's waist.

This panel includes several bear paws (a large one in upper left and a smaller one near the center), a snake (center left), a figure with upraised arms (just right of snake), and numerous other human-like figures in the lower half.

A row of spirit figures.
